Teaching the Freshman Seminar
Having completed the UNIV 4074 training course, First-Year Leaders are assigned to Freshman Seminars based on when such courses are offered by the schools, as well as each First Year Leader’s weekly availability.
During the fall semester, most faculty and staff instructors give their FYLs lots of creative freedom to design lesson plans that will benefit first-year students and help them adjust to life at UT Dallas.
Some of the most frequently taught subjects in Freshman Seminar classrooms include, but are not limited to:
- Academic Resources and Policies
- Campus Involvement
- Communication and Professionalism
- Conflict Management
- Health and Wellness
- Life Skills and Transitions
- Mental Health Awareness and Resources
- Majors and Career Exploration
- Money Management
- Networking and Social Connections
- Personal Development and Self-Assessment
- Research Opportunities
- Scheduling and Class Registration
- Self-Reflection and Motivation
- Student Success Programs and Resources
- Study Strategies
- Teamwork and Collaboration
- Things to Do in the DFW Area
- Time Management
Throughout the fall semester, FYLs receive weekly lesson plan feedback from the program’s leadership team and share their classroom experiences with peers in the UNIV 4076 training course.
Together each fall, we celebrate our Freshman Seminar successes, troubleshoot our challenges, and gain insights about teaching and mentoring from each other.
