Skills and Competencies

Most First-Year Leaders joined the program because they had memorable experiences during their Freshman Seminar and want to pay it forward by helping other first-year students adjust to college life at UT Dallas.

But students who join the FYL Program do more than simply pay it forward. They also develop professional and interpersonal skills and gain experience in what medical and professional schools refer to as “core competencies.”

In fact, the FYL Program satisfies 11 of the 15 core competencies required by the Association of American Medical Colleges:

  • Capacity for Improvement
  • Critical Thinking
  • Cultural Competence
  • Ethical Responsibility to Self and Others
  • Oral Communication
  • Reliability and Dependability
  • Resilience and Adaptability
  • Service Orientation
  • Social Skills
  • Teamwork
  • Written Communication

Whatever your professional goals, the FYL Program will help you develop the kinds of soft skills that are highly valued by medical schools, graduate schools and employers!

Interested in joining the FYL Program?

Check out our application and recruitment information and contact Dr. J.D. Thomas at jd.thomas@utdallas.edu if you have any additional questions.

The things I learned in the FYL Program have countless benefits in all the other things I do and will definitely help in the journey to becoming a physician one day.
